Designing for People in Digital Spaces

For over 20 years, I have been shaping complex digital products and services in agile, cross-functional teams. I take ownership of projects often for many years, from the first user research through to iterative further development. Along the way, I have developed a keen instinct for solutions that are technically well-conceived and win people over through their usability and usefulness. Prototyping has long been an integral part of my daily work. Over the past two years, I have therefore consistently shifted my focus to AI-driven product development — taking my commitment to moving quickly and pragmatically from first idea to working product to a new level.

The Fundamentals

Before conceiving and designing a product, there is one central question: What should be achieved? As a User Experience Designer, I work at the intersection of business, users, and software development. A project can only succeed when the concerns of all three areas are properly addressed.

Using methods from Design Thinking and User-Centered Design, I define requirements and success criteria, always taking a pragmatic and goal-oriented approach. This ensures early in the project that the product will be accepted by the people who are meant to use it.

The use of artificial intelligence (LLMs) for analyzing and synthesizing data as well as for creating prototypes is a natural part of my work and can significantly shorten project timelines. Human review for accuracy and plausibility is equally essential.

My Process

Understand

Through interviews (moderated or asynchronous remote) with potential users and observing their behavior, I gain insight into their expectations and needs, along with important guidance on how to align these with business objectives. I map out the competitive landscape and resulting user expectations through competitive analyses.

Define

Using personas and customer journeys, I describe archetypal users and their various paths through a company's entire product and service offering. This ensures that not only individual users and isolated interactions are considered, but all important user groups and touchpoints.

Ideate

Cross-team ideation and co-creation workshops make it possible to develop a fresh perspective and overcome creative blocks. Most importantly, they create a shared understanding of the content and services to be developed, the effort involved, and their value for users.

Prototype

I turn defined content and page types into functional prototypes (Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, Replit) as early as possible and review them with all stakeholders. I apply existing design libraries (Figma) and modules and extend them as needed. For completely new designs, I collaborate with UI designers.

Test

Using the prototypes, I test with actual or potential users whether the product is understood and accepted by them. Corrections can thus be made before implementation. This ensures that development stays aligned with user expectations and needs.

Implement

I support the implementation phase through quality assurance and, when needed, user training. For products and services already on the market, analyses of user behavior, quantitative A/B tests, and qualitative user tests reveal problem areas and opportunities for improvement.

About Me

As a freelance User Experience Designer, I create concepts and designs for digital products and services — for global corporations, mid-sized companies, and small NGOs alike.

Before becoming self-employed, I worked as a team leader at T-Systems Multimedia Solutions and as a Senior Information Architect for GFT Technologies and iXL Germany (later Razorfish), where I served well-known clients such as Kaufhof, Tchibo, Mercedes-Benz, BARMER, Telekom, and PwC.
